Defining Blue Light

Blue light is a visible wavelength in the light spectrum. Blue light wavelengths main source is the sun. However, as technology has developed, artificial blue light has been introduced. Some of these artificial sources are electronic devices and certain types of lighting, especially LED sources.

UV light is light measured between 380 and 500 nanometers. A sub-category of blue light is high energy visible light, which is the light just above the UV spectrum that can be very penetrating, HEV light is 380 to 420 nanometers.

How the Lenses Work

The only types of lenses that can protect eyes from the blue light emitted from the sun are sunglasses or activated photochromic lenses. Clear blue light lenses filter some of the blue light, they do not block all of it, so they are not good for outdoors. While we are all aware of the risks of being exposed to UV light, the sun can cause more damage that people are aware of because they are not properly informed of the effects of HEV blue light.

Clear and almost clear blue light filtering lenses do provide sufficient HEV blue light from a screen or other indoor sources because they absorb a percentage of selective HEV blue wavelengths. Each lens is different, and manufacturers can provide transmission charts.
